All About Reading Level 3
At some point, a child stops feeling like a beginning reader and starts reading with real independence. All About Reading Level 3 helps make that transition possible, strengthening advanced phonics skills while building the fluency, comprehension, and confidence needed for more challenging books.
Building on the skills introduced in Levels 1 and 2, Level 3 teaches 16 additional phonograms, including OA, IGH, and KN. Through carefully sequenced lessons, your child continues to learn the phonics patterns that appear throughout English while gaining experience with longer, more complex words.
Level 3's collection of 25 fully decodable stories gives your child opportunities to apply his growing skills in increasingly engaging text. Because the stories contain only concepts that have already been taught, your child can focus on reading smoothly, understanding what he reads, and enjoying the story itself. Longer plots, richer vocabulary, and memorable characters help strengthen both fluency and comprehension.
Interactive activities, hands-on review, and the program's multisensory approach continue to reinforce new concepts while keeping lessons engaging. The mastery-based format ensures that your child thoroughly learns each skill before moving forward, creating a strong foundation for future reading success.
Beautifully illustrated, full-color readers encourage your child to spend more time reading, while the open-and-go lessons make teaching straightforward for parents. Just a few minutes a day helps your child develop the skills needed to tackle increasingly complex text with confidence.
By the end of Level 3, many children are ready to transition into traditional reading materials and chapter books. Others may choose to continue with Level 4 to complete their study of advanced phonics patterns and decoding skills.
If your child is ready to move beyond beginning reading and toward true reading independence, All About Reading Level 3 provides a clear and confidence-building next step.

Reading lessons shouldn't feel like a daily battle. All About Reading is a mastery-based, multisensory program that helps children build strong reading skills one step at a time. Based on the trusted Orton-Gillingham approach, it combines phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and reading practice into structured, effective, and surprisingly enjoyable lessons.
Rather than rushing children through a long list of concepts, All About Reading introduces one skill at a time and provides plenty of practice before moving on. This careful pacing helps children develop genuine confidence while reducing frustration for both parent and child.
Because the program is built around phonics, children learn how words work instead of relying heavily on memorization. Since the vast majority of English words can be decoded using phonics patterns, children gain the tools they need to tackle unfamiliar words independently.
The lessons are open-and-go, lightly scripted, and easy to teach. Parents don't need specialized training to be successful. Just a few minutes a day builds steady progress and strong reading habits.
One of the program's most-loved features is its collection of full-color readers. Unlike many beginning readers, these stories contain only the concepts children have already learned, allowing them to experience the satisfaction of truly reading on their own. Interactive activities, games, and hands-on review help reinforce new skills while keeping lessons engaging.
The series includes five levels, beginning with Pre-reading and continuing through Level 4. Whether you're preparing a preschooler for reading, teaching a beginning reader, or helping an older child strengthen foundational skills, All About Reading provides a clear, systematic path toward reading success.

How to Use All About Reading Level 3
- Start with the Teacher's Manual. The lessons are lightly scripted and easy to follow, so you don't need to be a reading expert to teach them. Simply open to the next lesson and follow the instructions.
- Before each lesson, gather any cards, game pieces, or activity materials called for in the manual. Most preparation is quick and helps support the program's hands-on, multisensory approach.
- Work through the lessons in order. Level 3 includes 54 sequential lessons that build on the skills taught in Levels 1 and 2. Your child will learn 16 additional phonograms, including OA, IGH, and KN, while continuing to strengthen decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.
- Plan on about 20 minutes per day. Short, consistent lessons help your child make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.
- Enjoy the hands-on activities. Games, puzzles, review exercises, and other interactive elements reinforce new concepts while keeping lessons engaging and memorable.
- Spend time with the readers. The two hardcover readers include 25 fully decodable stories that match the concepts taught in the lessons. Longer plots, richer vocabulary, and memorable characters give your child opportunities to practice reading smoothly while strengthening comprehension and confidence.
- Follow your child's pace. Some concepts may click immediately, while others may require additional review. Feel free to repeat activities or spend extra time on a lesson before moving forward.
- Look for growing independence. Level 3 is often where reading begins to feel more natural and automatic. As your child's skills strengthen, he may need less support and become more willing to tackle books on his own.
With consistent practice, engaging stories, and plenty of review, Level 3 helps your child build the fluency, confidence, and independence needed for increasingly challenging reading.

Every component of reading is taught: decoding (phonics and structural analysis), vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.
- Decoding (Phonics) Learn phonograms AI, AY, OA, IR, UR, OO, EA, IGH, TCH, DGE, EW, WR, KN, EIGH, OE, and TI, and read words containing the new phonograms; such as paint, play, boat, third, purple, soon, mean, light, match, budge, flew, wrong, know, sleigh, toe, and action. Also read words with Pickle syllables, as in bubble and table.
- Decoding (Structural Analysis) Identify base words; read words with vowel suffixes, as in fastest, and consonant suffixes, as in gladly; read words with prefixes, as in mistake, and learn syllable division rules for reading multi-syllable words.
- Vocabulary Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life, and understand homophones, synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes, idioms, and personification.
- Fluency Read with accuracy, meaningful expression, and natural phrasing.
- Comprehension Connect text to one's own experiences, make predictions, compare and contrast main characters, and skim for specific information.

”Instead of simply going through the rules and memorizing new words, AAR’s multi-sensory hands-on activities get your kids excited about practicing the new rules that they just learned.”

Thrift Schooling:
“One of the biggest perks to this curriculum is the hands-on aspect. My son loves when there is a cut and paste activity or something more involved than simply reading from the book. Once he becomes familiar with the key words through the activities, he has loosened up, had fun, and is ready to setttle down and get into the book.” Read the Review

All you need for the next level with that student is the Student & Teacher Materials. We have additional options for families who use All About Reading with more than one student.
The Letter Tiles app is not included, but you can purchase it for your compatible iPad, Android tablet, or Amazon Fire in your device's store. Don't forget that this app is not required if you purchase the Deluxe Set; it is a digital alternative to the physical Letter Tiles that are included!
Both students can share! If you prefer to have both children complete all tile activities simultaneously, you may wish to purchase an additional set. However, this is not required.
Either can be a great option. All About Reading Level 4 teaches students how to decode words that use less-common English spellings and pronunciations. For example, some of the words covered are juice, gnat, beige, daughter, comb, journey, rough, and rhyme. Level 4 also teaches how to decode words with various suffixes and those influenced by other languages. If your student would benefit from clear instruction on how to decode unusual or complicated words, then Level 4 is an ideal option.
On the other hand, many students who have mastered Level 3 are already picking up these words in the context of everyday reading. A better next step for these students can be to diversify their reading through a literature program. For that reason, Mosdos Opal is our typical recommendation for the next step after Level 3.
