Have Questions About this Product?

Yes. It is by the same author, but has been substantially updated.

What we love about the update is that it removes the pressure of experiments and lab notebooks while retaining rigorous scientific instruction. Plus, the redesigned books are a visual step up, too.

A simple guide to selecting the correct level by grade, reading ability, and parent involvement.

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"Should my child start Science Book 1 in Grade 1, or wait until Grade 3?"

The answer depends on your child’s reading ability and whether you’ll be teaching with read-aloud support. RS4K’s atoms-first spiral model allows for flexibility — younger learners can begin with parent assistance, while independent readers may start at higher levels.

📖 Parent Note:

  • Independent readers typically start Book 1 around Grade 3.
  • Younger learners (Grades 1–2) can thrive with teacher read-aloud support.
  • Strong readers in upper elementary may accelerate into Books 3–4.

✨ The goal is not to rush, but to build a strong, atoms-first foundation that will prepare your child for high school science and beyond.

Here’s our placement chart to guide your decision:

Thanks to his experience with Real Science-4-Kids last school year, my son was looking forward to starting Book 3. The books are well written. They include chapters on five strands of science (chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy). I appreciate that they include subjects built on from year to year, such as molecules and atoms. Some curricula cover topics once or twice in a series across grade levels, but RS4K builds on knowledge across each of the book levels. The included printable Science Notebook is helpful for checking his understanding.

Overall my son has enjoyed these books. For me, I'm not as happy with them this year. They changed to the digital dashboard from the previous PDFs by email. Before I could print out eveything I needed with ease at one time. Now, I have to download one piece at a time before I can print. It was a lot more work this year, plus the price went up. Their customer service was nice and they helped me quickly with pieces that were missing from the dashboard.

Not really a fan. I don't like the fonts/layout in the book. While it does cover the basics it's not great.
